Melbourne
this photograph was taken by one talented mother fucker. probably using a nice and expensive leica. i’m looking forward to seeing the man again next week, when he returns to melbourne. it will be the 3rd time seeing him perform live. the very first, way back in 2002.
i remember hearing “no such thing” on the radio, prior to knowing who he was, and loving it. went out, purchased “room for squares” and loved every song. seeing him live at the hifi bar, standing just a few rows away from the stage, i was blown away. fuck me, he played every song on the album and i somehow knew all the words. not only was his music good and the dude could play guitar, he had a really strong stage presence. the atmosphere was electric.
when i later discovered we were both born in 1977, i thought to myself ‘what i am doing working a boring office job?’ this guy, the same age as me, is living the dream. that night, he also pointed to his tattoo and said, ‘this is what you get when you no longer need to work for the man’. or something along those lines. it was inspiring.
7-and-a-half years later, i’m still working an office job. although now for a different man and getting paid well for it. but i still wish i had the balls (or vision) to try something different when i was much younger. like pick up a guitar or even a damn film camera.
even though i’ve lost the passion for it slightly, i’ll continue taking photographs and working on being published. hopefully one day soon, with a little hard work, it will take me places as well.
oh and in case you haven’t guessed, the photographer “slash” musician is john mayer.
